#15 Read about Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and future of libraries

Interesting views put forward by the authors - most saying libraries and librarians need to learn about and join the world of Web 2.0 or be swallowed up. Maybe even set up branches in Second life! Libraries need to deliver services instantly to users, including digital books that the new generation of users will "demand", on their electronic devices - (phones, PCs, Laptops, Blackberries iPods, ).

However, a word of caution from Wendy Schultz, who says eventually users will become weary of the technohustle and will need a quiet place to relax with a cup of coffee and a book :"You know, a library!"

#15 Web 2.0 Future of libraries

I read 3 of the articles. Most interesting quote was "you think they can't have everything? Think again!" Rick Anderson : Away from the icebergs. This is in response to Rick's statement that the 'just in case' print collections are becoming outdated, and that users will demand digital collections. Libraries will need to integrate their services into users' daily pattern of work, study and play, and we will have to think of new ways to bring services to clients instead of waiting for them to come to us.

Such is the online way of life that is permeating our every move and the expectation that instant gratification brings.

#14 Technorati

Certainly is a lot to cover in Technorati. And do I really care that the world is awash with bloggers wishing to share their thoughts, faves, tags, with the world? My search for Web 2.0 unearthed pages and pages of hits, but the first was uninspiring. Marketing had the biggest tag when I searched the tags. I see that you could also create a widget, and book shelf.
I see it as mainly a social site rather than a professional one

#13 Tagging and social book marking

del.icio.us was interesting, I can see the value if you are working from more than one computer - you can always have your favourites on hand. One article said their was an increase in the academic community using the site. The PLCMCL2's site demonstrated how information sharing amongst colleagues works. Tagging seems to be the way of the future.

#11 Catalogue some books in Library thing

A widget! more jargon. And I had thought a widget was something inside a can of drink......
It was very easy to do this search box from Library Thing- thanks to Christopher who created it! Now, just have to put it somewhere useful! Having fun anyway - and feeling guilty because it doesn't seem like work! AT first didn't think I would spend toomuch time collating a list of books - but on second thoughts it would be handy to remember all the books I have read over the years.



Now I have 5 books on my list.... Couldn't seem to put my catalogue on my blog....the blog would not accept the html I pasted...so I'll just put the link here, as I'm running out of time. Will get back and try to master it after I've completed Learning 23 things.

#9 Locate some interesting library related blogs and newsfeeds

Came across numerous blogs on Wikis. Debate rages on whether Wikipedia is a reliable source and a university lecturer preaches that it should not be solely relied upon for accurate content. It is taking a pummeling from competitors. An alternative to emerge recently is Digital Universe - offering portals such topics as the Cosmos, Human Rights and the Artic. Paid experts will oversee the creation of content, and editors will approve other editors. A blogger claims that it offers a way to finding a cure for Chronic Information Fatigue! You will be able to type in your age to retrieve "age specific" information.....scary! At my age I'm inclined to lie about it!!

lso from LooneyNews.com, I found a debate over Dewey. A library in Arizona has dropped the Dewey decimal system for subject headings that more resemble a bookstore. A librarian wrote that she wasn't not necessarily a fan of DDS, but that she couldn't find what she was looking for at most big name bookstores.

#8 Learn about RSS feeds and creat your own Bloglines Newsreader account

Finally I see how RSS feeds could be useful in my professional and personal life. I actually created a Bloglines account a few months ago at the urging of a colleague. I rediscovered it, and added more feeds and tags. Now will get feeds when local breaking news is added, and when cool photos are posted on Flickr of the beautiful coastline at my hometown. See at left the convict built Bogey hole on a rather wild day. (I don't recommend a swim when it's like this!)

#6 Discover Flickr mashups and third party sites

Mashups and third parties....well I'm not sure where I fit into all this but I'veread up on them, and encountered lots of jargon, which I'm sure will all fall into place as I progress. I've registed with Amazon Web services, but am not sure what I need to do with it! (I think it's an age thing..)

Due to sick leave and holidays I've fallen further behind, unable to zoom through like hi tech super beings that have finished. Nevertherless I am soldiering on....

Respondents to a recent McKinsey survey show widespread but careful interest in this trend that promotes automation and networking online. Executives say they are using Web 2.0 technologies to communicate with customers and business partners and to encourage collaboration inside the company. Seventy percent say they are using some combination of these technologies for communicating with their customers. Some locations such as India stand out for their enthusiasm in embracing these technologies.

#5 Learning about Flickr

It wasn't so hard after all, adding an image to my blog. Images of the Pasha Bulker abound on the web, and Flickr was no exception. On the left, see the latest tourist attraction in Newcastle attractively silhouetted at sunrise, and as we speak it remains held fast on the rocks, although facing in a different direction, as from last night.

Blogging has started! I guess this is the way to find out what the world is thinking.
So far, with Learning 23 Things, there are no real problems (or "challenges" as the Life Long Learners call them). On that note the LLL had some helpful pointers on learning, eg, setting and writing down your goals, and having confidence in yourself.
